The Society for Psychical Research appears again and again behind the archive's ghost cases. Its journal published the Combermere Abbey photograph in December 1895, after Sir William F. Barrett, a physicist and SPR founder, interviewed Miss Corbet. In 1918 came the McConnel apparition at Scampton. The SPR's editors stressed that Larkin named McConnel before he could have known of the accident. Its 1894 Census of Hallucinations put such death-coinciding visions at about 440 times chance. At Puys, G. W. Lambert and K. Gay found the Dieppe witnesses well balanced. Decades later, Tom Ruffles reviewed the Battersea Poltergeist memoir for the SPR.
