May 7, 1892. Late afternoon on a country road near St Boswells, in the Scottish Borders. Miss M. W. Scott stopped running. A few yards ahead walked a tall man dressed in black. She watched him turn a sharp corner. Then he was gone, with thick beech hedges on either side and open fields beyond. Further on, her sister Louisa stood looking around, bewildered. She had seen him too. Over the next eight years the pale figure in old clerical dress returned again and again, in broad daylight, to sisters, neighbours and village girls. The Society for Psychical Research put it on record.

Context

St Boswells sits in the Scottish Borders, in what was then Roxburghshire. Its old name is Lessudden. Miss M. W. Scott and her sisters wrote from Lessudden House, recorded as the seat of the Scotts of Raeburn. Her walk home ran along a quiet country road. Mostly level. A short incline ending in a sharp corner. Hedges and banks on both sides, open fields beyond. Locals spoke of blue lights after dark, and of a child murdered nearby.
