Scampton Aerodrome, near Lincoln. Saturday, 7 December 1918. Lt. J. J. Larkin was writing letters in the room he shared with his friend, 2nd Lt. David McConnel. Footsteps came up the passage. The door clattered open, the way it always did. McConnel stood in the doorway in full flying clothes and his naval cap, smiling. "Hello boy!" They spoke for a moment. Then he closed the door noisily and went out. That evening, Larkin heard the news. McConnel had crashed in fog near Tadcaster. His watch had stopped at 3:25 pm. Larkin had placed the visit between a quarter and half-past three.
