crisis apparition

Term 5 stories, 1705 to 1918

A figure seen near the moment of death. Seen by someone who did not yet know. That is the crisis apparition, one of the oldest patterns in psychic literature. October 15, 1785. In barracks at Sydney, Cape Breton, Lieutenant George Wynyard saw his brother cross the room, and months later learned he had died that very day. The ghost of Lord Lyttelton in 1779 became a classic of the type, as did the 1918 case of Lt. David McConnel at Scampton Aerodrome. The SPR's 1894 Census of Hallucinations claimed such apparitions occurred about 440 times more often than chance would predict.
