Across more than a century of strange reports, the American Society for Psychical Research sent its people to look. In 1889 Richard Hodgson took up the Wilmot apparition of 1863. He confirmed the sailing dates and the weather, and gathered statements from the witnesses. March 1922. Research officer Walter Franklin Prince arrived at the Caledonia Mills fire spook with traps, a revolver and a flash camera. No fires broke out while he stayed. In the Amityville haunting of 1975, the society's investigators quickly concluded that the paranormal claims were groundless.
