Early in 1970. A girl named Roma Mukherjee lay on her bed in Calcutta, studying for an English examination. Through an open door into the study, she saw a figure. At first it was semi-transparent. She could see objects in the room through it. Then it became opaque. It was Dadaji, the guru Roma followed. His body, the story goes, was some 400 miles away in Allahabad, alone in a prayer room. The figure signed for silence and asked for tea. Four members of the family would describe what happened. When they finally entered the study, it was empty. Half the tea was gone. A cigarette was still burning.

Context

Amiya Roy Chowdhury had been a celebrated radio singer, working at All India Radio, Calcutta, from 1929 to 1944. From 1967 he was known as Dadaji. Elder brother. Early in 1970 he was staying with a host family in Allahabad. While devotees sang in another room, he was "alone in the prayer room."
