October 1863. The steamer City of Limerick was fighting a storm in the North Atlantic, bound from Liverpool for New York. In a stern stateroom, a seasick S. R. Wilmot slept. He dreamed his wife came to him in her night-dress. She hesitated at the door. Then she kissed him and quietly withdrew. He woke to his cabin-mate's teasing. William J. Tait, wide awake in the upper berth, had seen the same woman. Back in Watertown, Connecticut, Mrs Wilmot had lain awake that night, thinking of her husband. When he came home she described a stateroom she had never seen, down to the man watching from the upper berth.
