Loppington, north Shropshire. Late October 1883. A servant girl of about 13 named Emma Davies is working on John Hampson's farm. Then the coal begins to leap from the fire. A saucepan jumps off the hob. Crockery rises from the table and falls, one or two pieces at a time. Small fires break out with flames "very high and white". Emma is sent home to Weston Lullingfields. The disturbances seem to follow her. Then, in a doctor's house in Wem, she is seen throwing a piece of brick. She confesses. Yet the investigator who reported for the Society for Psychical Research could not explain it all away.
