A Society for Psychical Research investigator, Alan Gauld turns up wherever the archive's séance rooms and haunted houses draw scrutiny. At Hannath Hall in Tydd St Giles, he and Tony Cornell took up the Fenland poltergeist case with student teams from Cambridge, visiting about 20 times. In 1974 he recorded the raps of the Toronto sitters in the Philip Experiment. He reported they had a different acoustic quality from ordinary raps. Later, at the Scole Experiment in Norfolk, he found the film box could be opened quickly in the dark.
