thylacine

Term 9 stories, 1810 to 2005

The Tasmanian tiger. A striped carnivorous marsupial, thought to have died out with the last captive animal at Hobart's Beaumaris Zoo in September 1936. Reports kept coming. In 1982, the year the IUCN declared it extinct, Parks and Wildlife officer Hans Naarding swept his spotlight near Togari and saw a large thylacine standing side-on, its eye reflecting yellow. In 1995 ranger Charlie Beasley watched what he took to be a juvenile near Pyengana, but an official search found nothing. As early as 1890, the Melbourne Leader invoked it to explain the Cardwell striped tiger case.
