Beast of Gévaudan

Event 8 stories, 1632 to 1820

The yardstick for every man-eating beast in the archive. The Beast of Gévaudan was at large from 1764, and by 1766 rural France already had it on its mind. That year the Bête de Sarlat began its attacks near Sarlat. Older cases are measured against it too. The Bête du Cinglais came more than 130 years before it, the Beast of Benais about seventy. Around 1799, near the old Gévaudan, people on the Causse Noir believed it had come back. Italian writers still call the Beast of Cusago Italy's Beast of Gévaudan.
