19 February 1693. Saint-Patrice, in the north-west of Touraine. Nine-year-old Pierre Boireau was found half eaten. Five days later a mother found the remains of her daughter Antoinette, 7, on the heath of Continvoir. It was only the beginning. For some eighteen months, beasts the priests called wolves stalked shepherds, children and young women from the Anjou border to the edge of Tours. One priest wrote that they were almost like a wolf, except for a larger mouth. They came up to people like friendly dogs. Then they leapt at the throat. The intendant ordered hunts. Two animals died. The killing went on.
