A historian at the University of Caen. Jean-Marc Moriceau leads the Homme et loup project and wrote Histoire du méchant loup and L'Homme contre le loup (2011). Across the archive's French beast cases, his reading is consistent. Wolves. He treats the Beast of the Gâtinais in 1652 as wolf predation, lists the Beast of Primarette as Le loup de Primarette, and includes the Beast of Veyreau in his catalogue of about 3,000 wolf attacks on people in France. For the Bête des Cévennes he pointed to several breeding pairs. Critics such as Raffin question how he counts attacks blamed on an unidentified bête.
