plesiosaur

A long-necked marine reptile, and the name witnesses and writers reach for when something with a neck rises from the water. 1925. On Moore's Beach in Santa Cruz, E. L. Wallace called a stranded carcass the remains of a plesiosaur, toothless and vegetarian. In 1976, fishermen John Cock and George Vinnicombe were shown a reference book off Lizard Point. Separately, both chose the plesiosaur. A museum official suggested a sea turtle instead. In 2007, UPI compared the Gordon Holmes Loch Ness video to one, though Holmes himself first thought of a very big eel.
