Christchurch

Place 3 stories, 1977 to 2016

A New Zealand city, and a quiet anchor for three very different stories. April 1977. The trawler Zuiyō Maru was fishing for mackerel east of Christchurch when it raised the carcass later called New Nessie. That July, in Kaiapoi, about 17 km to the north, the first Canterbury Panther report emerged, and a Christchurch veterinarian, Lindsay Fraser, weighed in on the droppings. Then June 2016. Oisin Lavelle filmed a colour-changing light from his deck in Lower Cashmere. Readers of The Press answered with their own sightings, including an orange sphere over the Botanic Gardens.
