Saturday, 26 May 2007. A layby on the A82, beside Loch Ness. Gordon Holmes, a lab technician from Shipley in West Yorkshire, had come to listen to the loch with a hydrophone. Then something moved on the water. About 200 yards out, a jet-black shape was streaking along on a fairly straight course, bubbling as it went. Holmes reached for the camcorder and filmed about two minutes. Adrian Shine called it "some of the best footage I have seen." BBC Scotland put it on the main news. In January 2016, a software executive's enhancement offered an answer that Holmes accepted.

Context

Gordon Holmes knew Loch Ness well. A 55-year-old lab technician at Bradford University, from Shipley in West Yorkshire, Holmes had already made six trips to the loch. This time the plan was to listen, with a hydrophone recording underwater sound.
