1988. Near Mundrabilla, on the Nullarbor Plain, the Knowles family met something on the road at night. Their encounter became the Nullarbor's famous case, a story of a vehicle said to be affected by what it found out there. In the archive it stands as the benchmark for quieter sightings along the same empty plain, such as the Cook railway gang sighting of 1965 and the Ooldea Siding freight-train sighting of 1985. A temperature inversion mirage was later put forward for the Knowles case, an idea that web summaries have sometimes misattributed to the Kimba glowing doorway encounter of 1973.
