February 1969. A company representative was driving the dark road north from Norseman toward Coolgardie, in Western Australia. Ahead, the reflection of a car's lights on the bitumen. He topped the rise. No car. Then he saw it. A glowing white-blue light, hovering at tree level. John House, 35, put his foot down. At 80 m.p.h. the cigar-shaped object kept alongside him. For about two miles it stayed with the car. When he finally stopped and got out, it veered away. The next morning he found dust, twigs and leaves disturbed where it had been. The Department of Civil Aviation said there were no aircraft in the area.

Context

The Eyre Highway crosses the Nullarbor and ends at Norseman, in Western Australia. From there the road runs north to Coolgardie. On 21 February 1969 the Perth daily The West Australian carried a strange story from that road, under a Kalgoorlie dateline. The headline read "Driver Reports U.F.O Chased Him At 80 m.p.h."
