On the Nullarbor Plain, flat and treeless, Cook sat at the 569-mile mark of the Trans-Australian Railway. It was a centre for track maintenance, home at its peak to more than 50 railway employees. Friday, 30 July 1965. A gang of five men working about 70 miles west of Cook saw a silver object hovering south of the line. Twenty years later, in 1985, Station Assistant Gary Edwards was on duty at Cook. Over the radio, the crew of train No. 1117 sounded terrified as a light hovered over their engine near Ooldea siding.
