Nullarbor Plain

Place 5 stories, 1965 to 1988

Flat and treeless. The Nullarbor Plain stretches across southern Australia, crossed by the Trans-Australian Railway and the Eyre Highway. In 1965 a railway gang at Cook, the track maintenance centre at the 569-mile mark, reported a sighting there, with Maralinga to the north and the Woomera rocket range further east. In 1978 a truck driver near Balladonia, on the plain's western edge, described an encounter and missing time. Then came the Ooldea siding freight-train sighting of 1985. January 1988. The Knowles family drove the Eyre Highway into the long dark of the plain.
