Woomera

Place 7 stories, 1953 to 1985

Woomera is a rocket and guided weapons range in the South Australian outback, run by the Long Range Weapons Establishment. In 1953 it came up in the Drury film case. The RAAF ruled out missile firings from Woomera as the source of the silver dart seen over Port Moresby. In 1954 the range had its own radar and binocular sighting. Later, Jim Templeton linked his Solway Firth Spaceman photograph to a Blue Streak countdown at Woomera, claiming it had been halted when technicians saw two large figures. The records gave bad weather and a systems fault as the reasons, and the rocket launched on 5 June 1964.
