A sensational national weekly. The Illustrated Police News ran from 1864 to 1938 and was known for melodramatic reports and engravings. It carried Spring-heeled Jack items through 1877, picturing him leaping onto Newport Arch at Lincoln as an angry mob gave chase. In Aldershot it wrote of spectral figures glowing with phosphorus. Ghosts filled its pages too. The Garstang Ghost of 1881, the Plumstead Ghost Riot of 1897, and a headless woman at Buckingham in January 1898. For some of these cases, its report or engraving is all that survives.
