Plumstead

Place 4 stories, 1895 to 1898

A district on the edge of Woolwich, in what is now the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Late October 1897. The Woolwich Gazette and Kentish Advertiser was already reporting trouble. A white-clad ghost had been seen around St James's Church on Burrage Road, and crowds gathered. About 100 lads assembled in the churchyard to waylay it, hurling stones and breaking several panes of glass. The ghost was later traced to a man living in the neighbourhood. Plumstead became a reference point for later accounts, cited beside the Hackney ghost hunt, the St Botolph's crowd and the headless woman at the Buckingham crossroads.
