Hammersmith Ghost

Event 7 stories, 1868 to 1897

London, 1803 and 1804. A ghost panic gripped Hammersmith, and armed men took to the streets to hunt it. The hunt ended in a shooting. Thomas Millwood was shot by mistake. Later Victorian cases kept returning to it as the benchmark of the prankster ghost and the mob that chased it, from the Garstang Ghost of 1881 to the Sunderland East End panic of 1883 and the Plumstead Ghost Riot of 1897. The Cromwell Terrace crowds of 1868 are set apart from it, a separate episode not to be confused with the original.
