In 1886 the Ballarat Courier reported a ghost sighting, then printed a reply from the ghost itself. Early 1904. A glowing figure with a whip haunted the railway station. Decades later, in the Ballarat and Bacchus Marsh Twin Lights case of 1973, a man in Barkly Street watched two reddish yellow lights cross the town in silence, heading toward Melbourne.
