Tuesday, 10 April 1973. Ten o'clock at night. In a back yard in Barkly Street, Ballarat, a man looked up and called his three sons outside. Two reddish yellow lights were streaking across the sky toward Melbourne, one behind the other, each dragging a vapor trail. There was no sound at all. On the Ballan road between Werribee and Bacchus Marsh, six people in a car saw them too. "Look, there are two jets coming," said Anne Tobin. They were travelling faster than jets. The RAAF blamed a falling Soviet satellite. Peter Tobin rejected it. The lights, he said, were "too much under control."

Context

In 1973, UFO reports in Australia went to the Royal Australian Air Force. Since 1960, the RAAF said, it had seriously investigated every one. It claimed to have explained 93 per cent of them. The night of Tuesday, 10 April 1973 would become its 668th investigation.
