In 1973, UFO reports in Australia went to the Royal Australian Air Force. Since 1960, the RAAF said, it had seriously investigated every one. It claimed to have explained 93 per cent of them. The twin lights over Ballarat and Bacchus Marsh on 10 April 1973 became its 668th investigation. A teenager's May 1963 encounter on the old Glencoe road near Mount Gambier also ended up in its files. Frederick Valentich, who vanished over Bass Strait in 1978, had applied to the RAAF twice and been rejected.
