Bass Strait

Place 4 stories, 1881 to 1978

The water between Victoria and Tasmania. Bass Strait has drawn sailors, pilots and stories for well over a century. In July 1881 a naval squadron carrying Prince George was usually placed there when the Flying Dutchman was reported at 4 a.m. During the Second World War, RAAF Beauforts trained over its dark waters at night, and in February 1944 pilot T.R.H. "Ricky" Royal said something joined him out there. Then came 21 October 1978. Frederick Valentich flew a Cessna 182L toward King Island and vanished, giving the Bass Strait Triangle its fame.
