Naval officers who saw something strange at sea reported it here. The Admiralty received the account of HMS Daedalus in 1848, after the crew saw an enormous serpent in the South Atlantic. It asked Captain M'Quhae to confirm the story, and his report, dated Hamoaze, 11 October, did exactly that. A letter about the brig Daphne later claimed its mate's account matched the one sent to the Admiralty. In 1877 Commander Pearson sent an official report on the Royal Yacht Osborne sea monster off Sicily. No Admiralty conclusion has been found.
