Charles Gould was the author of Mythical Monsters, published in 1886. In its pages he gathered the sea serpent reports of the century. He reprinted the full log statement of the Castilian off St Helena from 1857, and reproduced the sworn declaration from the SS Nestor in 1876. He also retold the 1833 sighting by British officers on St. Margaret's Bay. Not every story held up. He repeated the Brig Daphne serpent of 1848 with no word of the hoax, and even misplaced it relative to the Daedalus. A. C. Oudemans followed in 1892.
