A zoologist. In 1892, A. C. Oudemans published The Great Sea-Serpent, gathering 187 sightings into one book. Many of the archive's Victorian sea cases pass through its pages. He reprinted the HMS Plumper account of 1848, with a redrawn sketch as Fig. 31. He reproduced Penny's drawing from the barque Pauline off Cape Roque. The Castilian sighting off St Helena he accepted as a true encounter, fitting it to his theory of an unknown giant seal. The SS Nestor and the Royal Yacht Osborne sightings appear in his catalogue too.
