Gloucester

Place 4 stories, 1692 to 1880

A town on Cape Ann, Massachusetts. In the summer of 1692 it kept a fortified garrison house while the witch trials ran in Salem. Then came the Spectre Leaguers, men at the edge of the corn who fell under musket fire and rose again. Rev. John Emerson blamed the Devil, and later ufologists called it a possible Colonial Hopkinsville. In 1817 a creature off Gloucester drew a committee from the Linnaean Society of New England. That sea serpent gave naturalists the name Scoliophis atlanticus. Charleston playwright William Crafts mocked the craze in 1819.
