A Leda-class frigate built at Sheerness. In the summer of 1848 she was homeward bound from the East Indies. Sunday 6 August 1848, about 5 p.m., some 300 miles off present-day Namibia. Her officers reported a sea serpent, and on 28 October the Illustrated London News covered it, sparking a craze that fed into the HMS Plumper and Castilian cases. Later classics such as the Valhalla sighting of 1905 and HMS Hilary in 1917 are set beside her. The name also surfaces in the Freddy Jackson ghost photograph, though there it was loosely used for Cranwell.
