A British illustrated weekly, and a recurring stage for sea serpents. On 28 October 1848 it printed Captain M'Quhae's report of the creature seen from HMS Daedalus, with engravings drawn with his input. A craze followed. On 14 April 1849 it ran an anonymous naval officer's letter on the HMS Plumper sighting, with a back page engraving. And on 4 June 1960, Burton's piece on the Soay Beast appeared in its pages, with the witnesses' sketches and an artist's reconstruction.
