A creature of the inland rivers and lagoons of south-eastern Australia. Among the Wiradjuri of the Riverina, bunyip is another word for the waa-wee, pictured as an animal the size of a calf. In 1872 three men reportedly watched a dog-faced bunyip swimming in Midgeon Lagoon near Narrandera. 1883. A carcass at Brungle Creek ran in several newspapers under the heading "Another Bunyip." In 1890 a Melbourne Zoo expedition failed to capture one seen around Euroa. Sceptics point to stray seals, goannas, eels or the booming bittern.
