The Headless Woman at the Buckingham Crossroads

c. 1898 · Crossroads with a hand-post, about six miles from Buckingham, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom

A dark country road outside Buckingham. A weather-beaten hand-post at a crossroads. A small plantation of young oak saplings. The night was well advanced when a well-known farmer and his friend, driving a horse and trap, saw a black figure standing a few yards ahead. It was completely enveloped in a long black sheet. It had the ghastly appearance of a headless woman. It did not answer. The horse trembled like a leaf. The figure vanished, then stood a few yards ahead of them again. Only when the farmer asked it, in the name of God, to speak did it glide away and seem to float through the hedge.

Context

The story survives in a single report. The Illustrated Police News of Saturday 8 January 1898 told its readers that "the people of Buckingham and neighbourhood are troubled at the appearance of a ghost." The truth of it, the paper said, was vouched for by a well-known farmer living in the neighbourhood.
