Not one person but a recurring figure. The unnamed companion, the second witness who rode or walked beside the main one. Outside Buckingham in 1898, a farmer's friend shared the trap when a headless woman in a black sheet blocked the road, and got down to take the reins. 30 October 1952. A man and his companion driving from Napier towards Greenmeadows watched a dazzling light hang over Sugarloaf Hill. At Monte Musinè in 1978, a second hiker saw the glow too, then led the search for the friend who vanished into it.
