A garrison town in Hampshire, and in 1877 the British Army's main home base. That spring, sentries at Aldershot Camp reported a figure in the dark at North Camp. It dodged about a sentry box, ignored a rifle shot and bounded away. The Times called it "The Aldershott Ghost", and the episode joined the legend of Spring-heeled Jack. Over a century later, on 12 August 1983, retired ex-serviceman Alfred Burtoo of North Town was fishing the Basingstoke Canal. A vivid light came over North Town and seemed to land on the railway embankment.
