At the south-western end of Loch Ness sits Fort Augustus. Its Benedictine abbey ran a monastery and a school on the shore, and its monks kept turning up in the loch's stories. In 1934 a local housemaid, Margaret Munro, described a creature on land at Borlum Bay, and Dom Cyril Dieckhoff wrote her account into his diary. In 1971 Fr Gregory Brusey reported his own sighting from the abbey. Nearby stood Ardachie Lodge. In 1952 it drew reports of an old woman fond of roses, and the abbot reportedly performed an exorcism.
