yowie

Term 7 stories, 1882 to 2000

Australia's answer to Bigfoot. The yowie is a hairy, man-like creature reported in the bush of New South Wales. In 1906 the Bega Budget told how Alf Smith saw a hairy man near Eden and fired at it. In 1930 two boys drove off a monkey-like animal at the Nullica River. Sydney researcher Paul Cropper, hunting yowies since 1976, recovered both reports. Not everyone accepts the label. Graham Joyner argues the modern yowie grew from older yahoo and hairy man reports and was little known before the mid-1970s.
