Arthur Marrin's Hairy Man on the Road to Captains Flat

October 1893 · Road between Braidwood and Captains Flat, New South Wales, Australia

October 1893. Arthur Marrin, a cordial manufacturer from Braidwood, was on the road to Captains Flat with a load of cordials. His dog bolted. Then something jumped up the bank onto the road. It stood on its hind legs, "between 6-7 feet high", its forelimbs stretched out like the arms of a man. Marrin had only his whip. He dropped it and picked up a stone. The stone struck the animal on the temple and brought it down. He finished it with the butt of the whip. He carried the body home to Braidwood, where a reporter examined it. Then it went into a shallow grave. Nobody has found it since.

Context

In 1893 the bush around Braidwood already had a name for something it could not explain. Teamsters at Parkers Gap had been frightened. Selectors around Molonglo, Foxlowe, Budawang and Sassafras spoke of the "Hairy Man". Across south-eastern Australia, 19th century reports told of an unidentified animal variously called the yahoo, the Australian ape or the Australian gorilla. Arthur Marrin made cordials in Braidwood. He delivered them by road.
