June 1930. The Nullica River, near Eden, on the far south coast of New South Wales. Two boys came upon a strange animal. It was brown. It was much larger than the average cattle dog. In shape, it resembled a monkey. And it was sitting up in a gorilla-like attitude. Tommy Bobbin, the biggest of the two boys, was eating a cob of corn. Terrified, but brave, Tommy threw it at the animal. The creature disappeared. The Delegate Argus carried the story on 19 June 1930. Then it lay forgotten in the archives until a yowie researcher went looking.
The Nullica River rises below Nullica Hill, within Nullica State Forest, about 11 kilometres west of Eden. It runs east and south-east to Nullica Bay, the southern bight of Twofold Bay, near Boydtown. Today the country falls within the Bega Valley Shire.
