Surrey Puma

Term 7 stories, 1903 to 2012

A press name for a big cat that would not go away. In the early 1960s, southern England lived through a long run of big cat reports. At Bushylease Farm, between Ewshot and Crondall, a cat made nocturnal visits, and in August 1964 a bullock was found severely lacerated. The papers called it the Surrey Puma. In 1964 Dr Maurice Burton noted that dog prints also show claw marks. The name became a touchstone, recalled beside the Shooters Hill cheetah, the Nottingham Lion and the Essex Lion of 2012.
