Maurice Burton

Person 9 stories, 1933 to 1965

A zoologist and author of The Elusive Monster, Dr Maurice Burton retired from the British Museum (Natural History) in 1958. Again and again, he reached for the ordinary animal. He projected Hugh Gray's 1933 lantern slides of Loch Ness and saw an otter rolling at the surface. He judged Arthur Grant's 1934 sketch consistent with an otter too. In the Illustrated London News in 1958 he backed the shoebill stork behind the kongamato reports. Then, in 1959, Tex Geddes and James Gavin each sent him written accounts of the Soay Beast.
