July 1965. A car moves along the Dores side of Loch Ness. Inside are Mr and Mrs Brand of Achilty, Contin, and Mrs Brand's father, Mr Andrew Walker. All three are sceptics about Nessie. Directly opposite Urquhart Castle, the loch lies as calm as a mill-pond. Then something breaks the surface. It is an object of considerable size, quite close to the shore. It makes at once for the centre of the loch. At speed. For several minutes the three watch, fascinated. Then it submerges. A week later the Ross-shire Journal reports that their views have changed.
By the summer of 1965, Loch Ness had its watchers. The Loch Ness Phenomena Investigation Bureau set up its camp at Achnahannet that year. A 1964 letter in a government file noted that sightings had concentrated in Urquhart Bay, and the Bureau had camera stations at the castle.
