June 15, 1965. Ian Cameron was fishing for brown trout on the south shore of Loch Ness. He was a senior Highland police officer. He did not believe in the monster. Then something broke the surface. A large, black, whale-like object, like an upturned boat. It went under and came back up turned end for end. It drifted toward him on the wind, to within about 250 to 300 yards. Then it seemed to change course. It crossed the loch against the wind, toward the Clansman Hotel, and went under. His friend William Fraser watched it too. So did motorists stopped on the far shore. One account says it lasted over 50 minutes.

A sceptic on the shore

Ian Cameron was a senior Highland police officer. Accounts variously call him a former head of the Highland CID, a superintendent and an inspector. He was a keen angler and an expert on Atlantic salmon. He did not believe in the monster. On 15 June 1965 he was fishing for brown trout on the south shore of Loch Ness, looking toward Urquhart Bay. His friend William Fraser was a few hundred yards further up the shoreline.
