Britain has a long tradition of phantom cats. The Beast of Exmoor is one of its best known names. In this archive it never takes centre stage. Instead it stands as a point of comparison, the reference that other mysteries are measured against. The Fen Tiger of 1982 joins it among Britain's phantom cats, beside the Beast of Bodmin. The Fowey skull of 1995 belongs to the same wider story of British big cats, alongside the Surrey Puma. And the Beast of Brassknocker Hill, from 1979, sits with it among the country's man-beasts and out-of-place animals.
