Scientific American

Organisation 5 stories, 1877 to 1929

A magazine that kept turning up when strange reports needed a hearing. On 14 July 1877 Scientific American ran the sea serpent seen from the royal yacht Osborne off Sicily. It offered a cause, not a dismissal: a submarine volcano north of Galita that may have driven the creature up. December 18, 1886. It printed Warner Cowgill's letter from Maracaibo on a curious humming light. In 2011 its writer Dan Schlenoff suggested a rare natural discharge. In 1922 it was blunter about Clemente Onelli's plesiosaur hunt, saying science utterly discredits a living plesiosaurus.
