A psychical researcher and a conjuror. Hereward Carrington turns up across decades of the strange. In 1908, at about 27, he sat with the medium Eusapia Palladino in Naples for the Society for Psychical Research, alongside Everard Feilding and William Wortley Baggally, and later wrote Eusapia Palladino and Her Phenomena (1909). In 1924 he joined the Scientific American committee testing "Margery", and was the only member to vote in her favour. He later interviewed surviving witnesses of the Amherst haunting, and Esther Cox herself. He believed she was innocent.
