In the archive, RAE Farnborough is remembered for one prank. 4 September 1967. Apprentices there staged a hoax, scattering six saucer props across southern England. It came in a restless year for British skies, weeks before police reported the Sussex Flying Cross and chased the Devon Flying Cross near Okehampton. The hoax surfaces in accounts of the Bacup Police Station Cigar and the Clapham Wood boomerang sighting. It returned again in 2008, when coverage of the first MoD UFO files released by the National Archives, including the Waterloo Bridge flying saucer, recalled the six fake saucers.
